Finally an answer.
Published on October 17, 2004 By TasT In Philosophy

I read the question looked at the answers, then read it again.

What is your ethnic group?

  • African-American
  • Asian-American
  • American Indian
  • Pacific Islander
  • Mexican-American
  • White
  • Other_______________

How was I supposed to answer this?  I could honestly choose three of the seven, but the instructions at the top of the form said only one answer per question.  I pondered for a while, going through the different options in my head. How was I to make this choice?  If I only pick one I wouldn't be honoring all my ancestors.  Then all the sudden it donned on me, While I respect my ancestors, lets face it they have been  gone for a long time.  So I checked the Box marked "other" and wrote in AMERICAN.

I need no other group name looming over me.

I didn't realize 'White' was an ethnic group. Wouldn't that category encompass quite a few different ethnic groups?

Yeah it does pictoratus, but since we aren't special or anything we just get lumped together. Personally, I'm a mutt just like most "whites".

Yes Pictoratus I think it would but, in America we don't have to be sensitive to the white guy so they normally get lumped together, for instance my ancestors were mostly Scottish. How often have you seen Scottish, Irish, South American, English, Austrailian etc.... on the answer list for any of these type questions?

Also it seems most people that check white are happy with that, My wife for example is from Spain yet she never bothers with checking other and writing in Spanish, she just checks white.

I have the same problem. It seems that nobody cares about 'The Others.' It induces that "the 'truth' is what is in our best interest."

If I'm feeling a bit contrary, I check 'Other' but don't fill in the blank.

When they ask for "race" I always just like to put "human"

Now if you really want to mess with them do what I do. Where it asks "Sex" I always write in "Other"

Gives them something new to think about lol

I hate when forms say "white, non-hispanic." My husband is half hispanic (though he does not look it), and so my children are not truly "non-hispanic," but they are "white." None of the choices seem completely accurate. My husband always goes with white for himself because he looks white and our last name is not hispanic. Blech.

I don't know what my daughter should put when she fills out these stupid things. She is a quarter Chinese, a quarter Thai, and then "white" Irish, Dutch, etc. Where does that leave her.

I once checked "other" and wrote in Alien X. I had a lot of wierd looks for that...
